Britain’s national security is in peril due to political complacency and under-investment in defence, according to former NATO chief George Robertson. He is set to deliver a rare public rebuke of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s handling of military spending.
Robertson, who authored the government’s strategic defence review, believes Starmer has not been willing to make the necessary investment in the military. He argues the British government has shown a “corrosive complacency towards defence”, putting the UK “in peril”.
In a forthcoming speech, Robertson will accuse “non-military experts in the Treasury” of “vandalism” regarding defence funding and criticize ministers for their “corrosive complacency”. He warns that current policies leave Britain vulnerable.
