Cyberattacks have targeted municipal water systems in at least seven states this week, prompting the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency to warn utilities nationwide that hackers are attempting to disrupt critical water infrastructure.
In Minnesota, malicious cyber activity affected more than 30 community water systems. Michigan has also reported attacks targeting nine of its state water supply systems.
Investigators and U.S. officials are probing the source of these attacks, with intelligence officials blaming Iranian-linked hackers. While the source remains under investigation, officials noted that the activity coincides with warnings that Iranian actors have been focusing on such systems. Regarding the Minnesota attacks, investigators stated the activity looks a lot like Iran, noting that if they are the culprits, it would not be the first time.
