The House passed a bill Tuesday known as the Sunshine Protection Act that would make daylight saving time permanent. This move advances a yearslong effort to end the practice of changing clocks twice a year and has bipartisan support, including the backing of President Donald Trump and some Democratic cosponsors.
Proponents, including the White House, argued that the change would provide more daylight during the times that Americans are most active. Furthermore, one US representative warned that the switch between Standard Time and Daylight Saving Time can increase the number of motor vehicle accidents and cardiovascular events.
The legislation allows states to opt out if they take action before the federal law is enacted. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration, where it faces an uncertain future.
