TikTok has agreed to pay up to $300 million and adopt new user protection measures to settle a child-safety lawsuit filed by Alabama. The agreement avoids a jury trial that was scheduled to begin Monday.
Alabama filed the lawsuit in 2025, alleging that the platform had negative effects on the mental well-being of youths. This settlement is the latest in a string of agreements by companies to address child addiction and is similar to a recent settlement reached by competitor Meta. Separately, Facebook was found liable in New Mexico for deceptive actions.
As part of the settlement, TikTok will implement several child safety measures, including daily time limits and increased parental control. The company also agrees to restrict access for children and impose enhanced age-verification measures for users in the state.
