US strike on alleged drug-smuggling boat in Pacific kills two

The US military launched operation "Southern Spear" in early September, with President Donald Trump arguing that Washington is effectively at war with drug cartels operating out of Latin America.

The Trump administration has conducted more than 60 strikes against boats allegedly trafficking drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The death toll in the nearly year-long campaign now exceeds 210 people.

US Southern Command stated that a strike on Sunday targeted a vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes. This follows a push by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to extend military operations onto land in Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras.
