A Los Angeles County grand jury has indicted 32-year-old Nick Reiner on first-degree murder charges in the deaths of his parents, actor and director Rob Reiner and photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment, which was returned on July 20 and unsealed Wednesday, accuses Reiner of stabbing the couple to death in their Brentwood home on December 14 before fleeing the scene.
Following the unsealing of the indictment, Nick Reiner entered a not guilty plea to two counts of murder with special circumstance allegations. He was arrested hours after the killings and charged two days later. Reiner has since been held in custody without bail. The grand jury's action allows prosecutors to skip the preliminary hearing process where evidence is typically aired publicly.
Prosecutors allege that Reiner personally used a knife in the commission of the crimes and add the allegation that he was lying in wait before attacking his parents. Due to these circumstances, Reiner is eligible for the death penalty, though prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will seek it.
