James Burrows, a major force in television comedy, has died, his attorney announced. Burrows spent his career behind the camera specializing in situation comedies, and while few viewers recognized him or knew his name beyond the opening credits, they were familiar with his work.

Beloved by actors, he co-created Cheers and directed more than 1,000 episodes of hit television shows, including Taxi, Friends, and The Big Bang Theory.

Among his extensive credits, Burrows directed every episode of the first run of the original series Will and Grace.
