Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has fined TikTok owner ByteDance Co Ltd. 153.7 million reais, or approximately $29.8 million, for the unlawful processing of personal data belonging to children and adolescents.
The regulator stated that ByteDance processed minors' personal information unlawfully and failed to maintain adequate safeguards. According to the report, the social network mishandled personal data and failed to block users under the age of 16.
In response to these failures, the platform will be required to implement stricter content filters and strengthen its parental supervision systems. ByteDance must also automatically apply stricter privacy settings to accounts belonging to children under 16.
