U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks resigned effective immediately on Thursday, informing staff that he is stepping down. Banks, who was appointed to the role when President Donald Trump took office in January 2025, stated that he is retiring, saying it is simply time.
During his tenure, Banks oversaw the most aggressive militarization of the U.S. southern border in recent history. He stated that he got the ship back on course, moving from the least secure and most chaotic border to the most secure the country has ever seen.
The resignation follows reports of prostitution allegations and occurs amidst broader controversy. Enforcement actions by the Border Patrol and ICE previously led to a partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security from February to late April.
Banks' departure is part of a leadership shake-up as the administration appears to recalibrate its approach to immigration operations. Secretary Markwayne Mullin will fill the position.
