Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco announced Thursday morning that tensions with the United States have escalated. The Mexican government has sharply criticized the treatment of its citizens under U.S. President Donald Trump's push to increase deportations.

The tension follows reports of several fatalities among Mexican nationals. An official stated that 14 Mexicans died while in the custody of ICE, and three more died during arrest operations.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced Mexico’s strongest response yet to these deaths in ICE custody and during immigration enforcement. The president vowed to go beyond diplomatic notes after a U.S. immigration agent fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican man, in Texas this week.
