A Mexican immigrant died in U.S. immigration custody in Los Angeles on March 25, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This marks at least the 14th death in ICE custody for 2026.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum stated her country will take steps to protest the death of the Mexican citizen. This follows a year where 31 deaths occurred in ICE detention in 2025, reaching a two-decade high.
Currently, the number of immigrants held in ICE detention is at a record level, with 68,000 individuals detained as of early February.
