A United Nations fact-finding mission has determined there are reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed war crimes during two military strikes in Iran in February. The report, published by the United Nations Human Rights Council, alleges that the U.S. was behind attacks on a school and a sports facility that killed scores of Iranian civilians.
One strike occurred on February 28 in Minab, Hormozgan province, where a U.S. Tomahawk missile collapsed the roof of the Shajareh Tayyebeh primary school. The school was described as clearly identifiable, and the attack killed 156 civilians, including 120 children. Investigators stated that the mistakes leading to these deaths went beyond negligence. A separate strike on the same day reportedly killed 22 civilians.
The mission also reported that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during a crackdown on recent protests, involving torture, enforced disappearances, and unlawful killings. Although the report will be discussed by the United Nations Human Rights Council, the fact-finding mission cannot bring criminal cases.
