The US Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into author and columnist E. Jean Carroll. The probe focuses on whether Carroll committed perjury during testimony tied to her civil lawsuits against President Donald Trump.
Carroll accused President Trump of raping her in a New York department store during the mid-1990s. In 2023, she won a defamation suit against Trump, and a civil trial found him liable for sexually abusing her.
Investigators are examining whether Carroll committed perjury in a 2022 deposition. During that testimony, Carroll stated that she did not accept outside financial support for her legal battles.
This inquiry is the latest in a series of investigations opened by the Trump administration's Justice Department into perceived adversaries of the president.
