Israeli forces fire shots and intercept Gaza aid flotilla vessels

armed conflict

Israeli forces intercepted an aid flotilla sailing towards Gaza on Tuesday, opening fire on at least two vessels according to video footage and organizers. Israel has denied the use of live ammunition and stated that there were no casualties.

A live feed from the Global Sumud Flotilla website showed armed Israeli soldiers boarding the vessels while activists in life vests surrendered with their hands up. During the operation, soldiers destroyed cameras mounted on the vessels.

The Global Sumud Flotilla reports that approximately 400 people were detained. Two boats continue to sail in the eastern Mediterranean, with the closest vessel, the Sirius, located 145 nautical miles away from Gaza.

In response to the event, foreign ministers from 10 countries have stated that Israel's storming of the aid flotilla is a blatant violation of international law.
