Progressive state representative and Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon secured a surprising upset victory in Florida's Democratic US Senate primary. Nixon, who is also a union organizer, defeated former National Security Council aide and White House official Alexander Vindman, a figure known for his role during the first impeachment of Donald Trump.
The victory was particularly notable given the disparity in campaign funding. At the end of July, Nixon had $975,000 while Vindman had $16.3 million.
Nixon will now face Republican Ashley Moody in the general election this November. In another Florida race, Trump-backed Byron Donalds won the Republican primary to succeed Governor DeSantis.
These primary races in Florida and Alaska have been closely monitored for indications of Republican or Democratic dominance ahead of the November midterm elections, which will determine control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate.
