US authorities arrested and charged Jessica Bowie, a 35-year-old woman from Albany, on Thursday for allegedly plotting an Islamic State-inspired attack on the New York State Capitol building.

Bowie is accused of planning to deploy an explosive device at the state capitol with the intention of killing public officials and destroying as much of the building as possible. Authorities described the plot as a major attack.

According to the Justice Department, Bowie told an FBI informant that she wanted to destroy the capitol buildings. Officials stated that her plan included fleeing to IS-controlled territory in Syria following the attack.

John A. Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security, noted that Bowie has been charged with providing support to a terror group and a terrorism offense.
