Four Die in Channel Migrant Boat Sinking

humanitarian crisis migration & refugees

Four people died Thursday attempting to cross the English Channel from France to England. The incident involved a small boat carrying over 40 people that ran into trouble early in the morning.

Two men and two women were swept away by currents near Equihen-Plage while trying to board an inflatable boat. One person was treated for hypothermia.

French authorities stated the situation is still being assessed and remains subject to change, with rescue efforts continuing off the coast of northern France. Thirty-eight others were rescued during the operation.

Crossings are increasing after a winter slowdown, though sea temperatures remain cold.
