Democratic candidate for Ohio governor Amy Acton was the target of an attack on Sunday afternoon during a campaign stop at the Canfield Fair in Mahoning County, near Youngstown. An armed assailant lunged at Acton and knocked volunteers to the ground, resulting in injuries to several people.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that the assailant charged toward Acton before being stopped by troopers. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Patrick Havas, was arrested and found to be in possession of weapons.
Governor Mike DeWine and Acton's Republican opponent issued condemnations following the incident. On Monday, Acton vowed to continue her campaign as a fierce warrior. The attack comes during the final weeks of campaigning before the November election in one of this year's most high-profile races.
