Former DR Congo President Joseph Kabila announced the launch of a new political-military coalition on Monday. This alliance, which includes the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels, is aimed at the current government of President Felix Tshisekedi.
The new coalition seeks to replace the existing AFC-M23 alliance, folding in the M23 movement that has already captured wide swaths of territory in eastern Congo. By taking this direct role in the insurgency, Kabila is openly backing a movement he previously had not supported.
This move comes despite Kabila being sentenced to death in absentia for alleged complicity with the group. The development arrives amid growing debate over constitutional changes before President Tshisekedi’s final term concludes in 2028.
Analysts suggest this new front could reshape the opposition to the current administration. However, the alliance has raised significant fears of increased fighting and further confrontation between the rebels and the government.
