Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is seeking closer links with the European Union and exploring the possibility of a unique alliance. Canada and the EU are reportedly discussing a new form of association that could deepen cooperation on trade, defense, artificial intelligence, and critical minerals.
While discussions regarding associate membership have been explored, Carney clarified that Canada is not looking to become a member of the bloc. A senior government official added that while the idea of associate membership has been floated, defining the official relationship is still premature.
This move toward the European Union comes as ties between Ottawa and Washington hit a fresh low. Carney highlighted the relationship by stating that Canada and the European Union share the same values and priorities, and possess very complementary strengths.
Although the EU has not been flexible about membership in the past, unnamed officials in both governments indicate that the bloc is open to the idea. Prime Minister Carney is scheduled to address the European Parliament next week.
