President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping met in Beijing on Thursday for a two-day summit. The visit concluded with lunch and tea as the US leader looked to shift attention toward trade talks that have so far produced little breakthrough.
During the summit, the leaders discussed the Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The White House stated that the two leaders agree the strait must remain open to support the free flow of energy. President Xi offered China's help to open the strait and pledged not to send military equipment to aid Iran in its war against the US and Israel.
President Trump noted that Xi largely agrees with him on the risks of Iran becoming a nuclear power, although Trump did not push his Chinese counterpart to pressure Tehran to reopen the strait. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that China should take a more active role in resolving the standoff over the strait.
While the leaders met in Beijing, Israel and Lebanon are set to resume peace talks in Washington.
