Evacuation warnings were issued on Oahu, Hawaii, Friday as a powerful storm and subsequent flooding threatened residents. Officials warned some may be trapped if the Wahiawā dam collapses, with potential life-threatening flooding in areas below.

Thousands have been evacuated due to winter storms saturating the island with heavy rainfall. Roads have been closed across the island chain as waters rose quickly overnight, inundating streets and vehicles.

Meteorologists predict more heavy rains in the coming days, as a “Kona low” brings a second wave of intense weather to Hawaii in two weeks.

Governor Josh Green stated the storm’s cost could exceed $1 billion.
