Trump says Iran talks resume after calling off strikes, but Iran denies them

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that negotiations to end the war with Iran would resume on Monday. The two nations have been at war since February 28, after the U.S. and Israel launched surprise strikes against Iran. Trump stated that he called off planned intense new strikes and a major attack on the Islamic Republic to allow for a diplomatic deal regarding Tehran's nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump described the current offer as a final opportunity and a last chance for Iran to reach an agreement before facing what he termed decapitation. He insisted that negotiations were underway to have the Strait of Hormuz completely open as soon as tomorrow. The president further declared that the U.S. military blockade would continue until Iran either makes a deal or chooses total surrender.

Iranian authorities have dismissed these statements, denying that any talks are underway with the United States or that any meetings are planned. Tehran's Foreign Ministry asserted that its only ongoing discussions are with Oman regarding the management of traffic through the critical passage of the Strait of Hormuz. This rebuttal follows a period of on-and-off fighting and the collapse of a memorandum of understanding in early July.

While President Trump maintains that a deal is imminent and that the U.S. is seeking a solution to a problem caused by Iran, the conflicting reports cast doubt on the progress toward a lasting peace. Analysts suggest that while a deal on the Strait of Hormuz might be achievable, a comprehensive peace agreement remains far off.
