The United States and Canada have agreed to delay the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which connects Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. The crossing had been slated to open to traffic later this month.

The delay follows threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to block the project. Trump stated that the U.S. had been treated unfairly during construction and asserted that the bridge should be at least half U.S.-owned.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the bridge across the Detroit River may take longer to open than anticipated. The Canadian government agency in charge of the planned bridge confirmed that both countries have agreed the crossing should not open at this time.

The project is valued at approximately $4.6 billion to $4.7 billion, or C$6.4 billion.
