United Airlines CEO confirms pursuit of American Airlines merger was rebuffed

United Airlines has ended its pursuit of a merger with American Airlines after the latter declined to engage following an initial approach. CEO Scott Kirby confirmed he had broached the idea of combining two of the world's largest carriers, but American Airlines was unwilling to consider the proposal.

Kirby argued that a merger would have strengthened corporate America, created jobs, and offered more affordable flying options. He also stated that such a move would allow the airline to compete more effectively with foreign carriers and believed the deal could have won approval from regulators.

Following the rejection, Kirby acknowledged that the process has ended. He noted that without a willing partner, a transaction of this size simply cannot be completed.
