Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has called on US President Donald Trump to suspend tariffs on the South American nation as the country continues to reel from a deadly earthquake. The disaster devastated the western Colombian cities of Cali and Pereira, killing at least 300 people.
President de la Espriella stated that he called President Trump to ask for a temporary suspension of the tariffs currently targeting Colombian goods as the country grapples with the aftermath of the quake.
Post-earthquake reconstruction is expected to cost about $6.4 billion, while Colombia has simultaneously been hit by renewed US tariffs. In late July, tariffs on Colombian products rose from 10 per cent to 12.5 per cent.
