Jetstar to charge passengers for overhead carry-on bags

Jetstar will begin charging passengers for the use of overhead luggage bins starting in February 2027. Under the new structure, tickets will only include one under-seat bag, such as a backpack, handbag, or laptop bag.

Fees for overhead locker baggage will start at A$25 (S$23) one-way and can reach up to $52. Along with these charges, the airline will remove the 7kg weight limit for carry-on bags, although size restrictions will remain in place.

Jetstar stated that struggling to find room in overhead lockers is a stressful part of the airport experience.

Experts say that add-on fees like these can make it harder to compare air fares and that cut-price fares may serve as a facade for endless charges. This move is seen as part of a broader industry shift toward monetizing nearly every aspect of the flight experience.
