Sally Rooney books no longer sold in UK over Palestine Action support

censorship literature

Irish writer Sally Rooney, the best-selling author of Normal People, Conversations With Friends, and Intermezzo, is withdrawing her books from sale in the United Kingdom. This action comes as a result of her public and vocal support for Palestine Action, a pro-Palestinian direct action group that the British government has banned as a terrorist organization.

The author and her publisher, Faber, stated that Rooney can no longer receive royalties from British sales because she pledged to donate her book revenues to the banned group. Due to these circumstances, Rooney has also cancelled a trip to the UK because of a fear of arrest.

Regarding the decision, publisher Faber described the inability to pass on earnings to a writer while continuing to sell their work as an unconscionable situation.
