Nearly 8,000 people died or disappeared on migration routes last year, according to a U.N. agency. The agency highlighted that sea routes to Europe are the most deadly, accounting for more than four in every 10 deaths and disappearances.

Many of these cases are described as invisible shipwrecks, which occur when entire boats are lost at sea and never found.

Since 2014, the total number of dead and missing migrants has exceeded 80,000 people. The migration agency estimates that at least 340,000 family members have been directly affected by this missing migrant crisis.
