Mexico defeated South Korea 1-0 on Thursday to become the first team to advance to the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup. The victory was secured by a 50th-minute goal from Luis Romo, who took advantage of a defensive blunder by South Korea.
The win gives Mexico six points from two matches, allowing them to top Group A. This is the first time the team has topped a World Cup group since 2002.
Coach Javier Aguirre played down the achievement, saying the real measure of success would come later in the tournament. Mexico will next face the Czech Republic at the Estadio Azteca on June 24, before playing their first knockout game in Mexico City on June 30.
