Gunman dies, police officer wounded in shooting near Ontario synagogue

A police officer and a 29-year-old man were wounded in an exchange of gunfire on Sunday night near a synagogue in Belleville, Ontario. The incident occurred around 7:10 pm as members of the Jewish community gathered at the Sons of Jacob Synagogue to mark Yom Kippur.

Authorities report that the man opened fire on a police constable outside the place of worship. Officers protecting the synagogue returned fire, resulting in a shootout where up to 30 shots were fired.

Both individuals were transported to a hospital for their injuries. Officials stated that the man was hospitalized in critical, life-threatening condition. The province's special investigations unit is involved in the incident, which took place approximately 110 miles east of Toronto.
