Canada announced plans on Wednesday to purchase a fleet of early warning radar planes from Sweden's Saab and Canada's Bombardier. Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement at a defense conference in Ottawa, specifying that the country will opt for Saab's GlobalEye aircraft over a competing option from Boeing.
Prime Minister Carney stated that the Canadian Armed Forces need the planes to help detect and deter threats across the Arctic.
The decision reflects Canada's desire to reduce its reliance on U.S. defense firms. Carney has expressed a wish to diversify from the United States, which has threatened to annex Canada.
