Iran is considering the implementation of service fees for ships utilizing the Strait of Hormuz. According to Iran’s ambassador to Beijing, China and other friendly nations will be granted special considerations when the level and nature of these fees are determined. Iran maintains that special treatment should be awarded to countries that are friendly to it.
Under an initial peace deal, ships were permitted to transit the strait free of charge for 60 days. It remains unclear what policies will be in place after this period concludes.
The proposal has met with varying responses from global powers. China, which buys almost all of Iran’s oil exports, has called for the unhindered flow of shipping through the strait. Conversely, Washington has rejected the idea of charging fees to transit the waterway.
