The European Union unveiled a new strategy for the Arctic on Tuesday, aiming to step up its presence in the far north. The move comes as melting ice opens new maritime routes and intensifies competition for resources, putting the region in the geopolitical spotlight.
The EU is jostling for influence with Russia, China, and the United States. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas stated that Arctic security is being undermined by GPS jamming, drone incursions, and cable sabotage.
To address these security concerns, the new plan focuses on bolstering surveillance through enhanced satellite monitoring and the establishment of a maritime security hub. Additionally, the EU intends to increase the monitoring of undersea cables and assist member states in purchasing icebreakers.
