A small plane carrying tourists crashed into a field outside the city of Nazca, Peru, on Saturday. Local authorities reported that 13 people died in the accident, including 11 passengers and two crew members.
The aircraft had departed from the nearby city of Ica and was operated by the Peruvian company Aerodiana. According to its website, the airline has used Cessna Grand Caravan planes for scenic flights over the region for the past 14 years.
The flight was a sightseeing tour of the Nazca Lines, a UNESCO-recognized group of extensive geoglyphs etched into the southern Peruvian desert by Indigenous inhabitants hundreds of years ago. These images of animals can only be fully appreciated from viewing towers or planes.
Peruvian authorities stated that the accident is currently under investigation. Aerodiana was not immediately available for comment.
