A 40-foot whale stranded in the Baltic Sea near Timmendorfer Strand, Germany, has swum free after rescuers created an escape route. The 15-ton mammal had been stuck in shallow waters for days, and several previous attempts to free it had been unsuccessful.

Rescue teams used earth moving equipment to dredge a channel through the sand, allowing the whale to reach deeper water on Friday morning. The animal is now being monitored with support from multiple vessels, described as a “police escort”.

Despite the successful effort, experts remain concerned about the whale’s well-being and the potential dangers it still faces.
