Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party won a landslide parliamentary majority in the June 1 elections, according to results released by the national election board on Sunday. The ruling party comfortably secured the victory against a fragmented opposition, maintaining an overwhelming majority in parliament.
Abiy, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who has led Ethiopia since 2018, created the Prosperity Party in 2019 after being appointed following mass protests against the long-ruling EPRDF coalition. The party previously won more than 90% of the available seats in the 2021 parliamentary elections.
The victory provides Abiy another five years to pursue his reformist economic agenda and increase his regional sway in the country of 130 million people. Despite the win, Abiy is increasingly criticized for growing authoritarianism in contrast to his early years, and analysts warn of renewed conflicts in Ethiopia.
