Trump administration targets ICC to isolate, disable and dismantle it

international relations

The Trump administration announced a whole-of-government campaign against the International Criminal Court on Monday. According to a State Department official, the effort is intended to dismantle what the administration calls a threat to U.S. sovereignty.

The State Department indicated it is considering additional sanctions against the Hague-based institution, as well as revoking visas and implementing travel bans for ICC officials. The administration also plans to pressure other countries to withdraw from the court, marking a sharp escalation in efforts to isolate the tribunal.

Furthermore, the U.S. is upping its pressure campaign by threatening allies who support investigations. This move follows a lawsuit filed by some judges alleging the U.S. was punishing and pressuring them over past legal decisions.

Hostility toward the court from the Trump administration dates back to his first term.
