Seven villagers, including miners seeking gold, became trapped in a flooded cave in central Laos after flash flooding blocked their exit. The group remained trapped for more than a week, with rescue operations further complicated by heavy rain.
Lao and Thai rescue workers utilized pumps to drain water from the cave system to facilitate the rescue. Divers faced perilous conditions, including narrow, deluged tunnels, sharp rocks, and mud walls at risk of collapse. At one point, the lead rescue diver suggested that teaching the trapped miners how to scuba dive might be the only way to free them.
Five of the men have been successfully evacuated. The first individual was brought to safety on Friday, and four others were able to leave the mine on Saturday after water levels receded enough for them to crawl out with divers. Some of the survivors had been discovered huddled together on a rocky ledge about 300 meters from the cave entrance.
Despite these successes, two people remain missing. Rescuers continue to crawl through the dangerous cave system and navigate muddy waters in an effort to locate the final two members of the party.
