A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 rattled eastern Japan, including the Tokyo area, early Sunday. Tokyo and the wider Kanto region were jolted awake by the quake, which registered up to a lower 5 on Japan's seven-point seismic scale.
Despite the shaking, no tsunami warning was issued and there was no risk of a tsunami. The late-night quake did disrupt regional train services in Tokyo on Sunday morning, according to East Japan Railway Company.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi asked residents in the areas where the shaking was particularly strong to remain vigilant for the possibility of another earthquake of a similar magnitude.
