The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced several major changes to Oscar eligibility requirements on Friday. A central part of these updates is a new crackdown on artificial intelligence, establishing that only live, human performers and human-authored screenplays are eligible for acting and writing awards.
Under new statutes decreed by the board of governors, acting Oscars will only be awarded to performances demonstrably performed by humans with their consent. These requirements address the eligibility of films using artificial intelligence for the 2027 Oscars, clarifying that AI cannot be used to qualify for these top prizes.
The Academy also introduced a new policy allowing for multiple nominations for a single actor within one category.
Additionally, rules for the international film category have been rewritten. Eligibility has been expanded to include films that won top awards from prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Venice, and Toronto.
