A fire has gutted the Eagle's Nest, Adolf Hitler's former mountain retreat in the Bavarian Alps of southern Germany. The blaze occurred at the Kehlsteinhaus residence, located on the peak of Obersalzberg near the Austrian border. Police reported that the building burned down almost completely, and the local tourism authority stated it is unclear if any parts of the structure can be salvaged.
Approximately 200 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze. Efforts to extinguish the fire were hampered by local conditions and the remote, difficult-to-access nature of the location. No injuries were reported at the building.
Authorities have arrested a suspect who was detained at the scene. Police officials reported that officers heading to the retreat on Friday night stopped a rider on a red motorcycle with no license plate. Investigators indicated that the suspect may have psychiatric problems.
The building was completed in 1938 and designed to be used as a retreat for Nazi officials, although it was rarely used by Hitler himself.
