Louisiana's Republican legislature approved a new congressional map on Friday that eliminates one of the state's two majority-Black districts. In its place, lawmakers drew an additional Republican-leaning district.
The approval comes a month after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the state's current map unconstitutional, striking it down as an illegal racial gerrymander. This sweeping ruling, which weakened the landmark 1965 federal Voting Rights Act, led lawmakers to race to implement the new map.
If upheld in court, the new map would likely lead to a one-seat GOP pickup in the November election. The move boosts Republicans' odds of retaining the U.S. House of Representatives in the midterm elections.
