A pontoon pleasure boat capsized and sank in the San Francisco Bay on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and others missing. The incident occurred approximately 600 yards from Alcatraz Island.
Authorities reported that 19 to 20 people were aboard the vessel. While between 16 and 17 people were rescued, reports on the number of missing individuals range from one to three. A dog was also declared dead, and all passengers are believed to be adults.
Of those rescued, 13 were safe on shore, while three others received medical treatment at a San Francisco hospital. One person removed from the water was reported to be receiving CPR.
Officials stated that a fire had started on the vessel. It remains unknown if the boat was headed toward Alcatraz, a major tourist attraction where the shuttered buildings of the former prison still stand.
