Conservative Keiko Fujimori has been officially declared the winner of Peru's presidential runoff election. The country's electoral office solidified the right-wing leader's narrow victory over leftist Roberto Sanchez on Friday, following weeks of reviewing contested ballots and amidst protests and accusations of fraud in one of the closest presidential races in the country's history.
Fujimori will take office on July 28, inheriting a country currently beset by political instability and organized crime.
Voters were primarily concerned with increasing levels of crime, especially extortion by violent organized crime gangs. To address these issues, Fujimori has pledged to combat crime with an iron fist.
