At least 25 people, many of them teenagers and schoolchildren, were killed on Saturday when a passenger bus plunged into a ravine on Fogo Island in Cape Verde. The accident occurred in a mountainous area on the Campanas de Cima route.
Several people were also injured in the crash. Local health authorities reported that seven of the victims were buried immediately due to their condition. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined by authorities.
President José Maria Pereira Neves described the tragedy as a great catastrophe. The government has announced two days of mourning, and the president and other officials are expected to visit the island on Sunday.
