A U.S.-mediated ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, which lasted from May 9 to 11, expired at midnight on Tuesday. Following the end of the truce, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Moscow launched more than 200 drone strikes in a single night.
Russian forces launched attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where officials reported at least six people were killed. Local administration chiefs also noted that one person was killed and four others were wounded in attacks within the region. Additionally, at least one person was killed in eastern Ukraine after the ceasefire expired.
The Russian military stated it shot down 27 Ukrainian drones after the ceasefire ended. According to the president, these attacks come in retaliation for Russian strikes that killed at least six people. This follows a warning issued by Zelenskyy on Sunday that Ukraine would retaliate if Russia decided to return to a full-scale war.
President Zelenskyy stated that combat continues on the frontline, two days after Vladimir Putin claimed the war was coming to an end. The return to hostilities has dimmed hopes that the temporary truce would be extended.
