Tesla and at least eight other automakers are recalling more than 4 million vehicles in China. The move comes as Chinese safety regulators crack down on vehicles with doors that do not open during crashes.
The recalls are driven by safety concerns regarding retractable door handles, which have led to vehicle entrapment and multiple fatalities. China's regulator ordered the changes after it was determined that occupants sometimes had difficulty exiting electric cars after collisions.
To resolve these issues, Tesla and the other carmakers will install warning labels to help occupants locate manual door releases that are often hard to find. Specifically, Tesla is voluntarily recalling about 3 million of its vehicles to address these door handle safety concerns as well as deficient driver monitoring systems.
