Israel recently conducted strikes in Syria, targeting a "terrorist" in the south and a disused military base in the northwest near the Turkish border. While Israel claimed Türkiye sought to use the northwestern base, Syria described the southern operation as a drone strike on a civilian vehicle on the outskirts of Damascus.
Syria has condemned the attacks as a "blatant violation" of its territory, a "flagrant violation of sovereignty," and a "blatant breach of international law."
US envoy for Syria and Iraq Tom Barrack slammed the attack on the northwestern air base, calling it an "unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability." Barrack issued a stern warning, invoking the downing of a Russian jet more than a decade ago that escalated regional tensions.
Additionally, Barrack criticized Israel for failing to provide the United States with adequate warning, a claim that Tel Aviv denies.
