Small plane crash in Texas Hill Country kills five

Five people were killed late Thursday night when a Cessna 421C small plane crashed in Wimberley, Texas. The crash occurred around 11:25 p.m. in the city, which is located about 40 miles southwest of Austin.

Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra stated that preliminary information indicates the plane was traveling at a high rate of speed before crashing among trees in the Texas Hill Country. The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. Wimberley, with a population of about 3,000, is a popular hiking and tourist destination situated next to the Blanco River.

A second aircraft that was traveling in the area landed safely near San Antonio. Wimberley Mayor Jim Chiles stated that he did not have any information about the crash.
